Fox, Washington Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Biden bestows the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington

Actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington were among the distinguished recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented by President Joe Biden. This year’s ceremony marked the final such presentation during Biden’s presidency.

The White House cited the extensive philanthropic work of both actors as key reasons for their selection. Fox’s tireless advocacy and fundraising efforts for Parkinson’s research, having raised over $2 billion, were highlighted. Washington’s role as a national spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America was also recognized. Both actors have dedicated decades to their respective causes, making their recognition with the Medal of Freedom a significant and well-deserved acknowledgment of their commitment. It is noteworthy that Washington was originally scheduled to receive the award in 2022 but was unable to attend due to a COVID-19 infection.

The announcement coincided with recent headlines surrounding both actors. Fox, who stepped away from acting to prioritize his health and activism, has hinted at a potential return to the screen, should the right role present itself. He also received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022. Meanwhile, Washington, following the release of *Gladiator II*, has alluded to an impending retirement from acting. His impressive career also includes the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award, received in 2019.

President Biden’s opening remarks emphasized the exceptional contributions of all the recipients: “For the final time as president, I have the honor of bestowing the Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor, to a group of extraordinary—truly extraordinary people who gave their sacred effort to shape the culture and the cause of America.”

Other notable recipients included U2’s Bono, NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and science communicator Bill Nye. This adds to President Biden’s previous awards, which have included TV host Phil Donahue, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, and Olympian Simone Biles.

The honor for Michael J. Fox prompted a congratulatory message from his *Back to the Future* co-star Christopher Lloyd via Twitter: “Much deserved my dear friend @realmikefox.”

The inclusion of Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington in this prestigious list underscores their significant impact beyond their acting careers. Their dedication to philanthropy and advocacy serves as an inspiration, making their recognition with the Presidential Medal of Freedom a fitting tribute to their lasting contributions to society.
