The funeral procession for former President Jimmy Carter has begun in his home state of Georgia, following his death earlier this week at the age of 100. A motorcade carrying the flag-draped casket of the 39th president departed from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Plains, Georgia, on Saturday. Former Secret Service agents who served on his detail acted as pallbearers for the initial leg of the journey.
A private service will be held at the Carter Center in Atlanta later on Saturday. This presidential library, established by President Carter himself, will then host a public viewing for mourners from Saturday through Tuesday. Following the Atlanta services, President Carter’s remains will be transported to Washington, D.C., for a service honoring his legacy before a national funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.
As previously reported, the Carter Center announced that the former president passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, surrounded by his family. His passing marked the end of an era, as he was the longest-living former U.S. president in history.
