Goat Eats Christmas Tree: Disposal Option Explored

The Urban Growers Collective is offering a unique solution for Chicago residents looking to dispose of their old Christmas trees: feed them to goats! Until January 11th, residents can donate their undecorated trees to the Collective’s South Chicago Farm (9001 S. Mackinaw Ave.) between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The farm’s 15 Nigerian pygmy goats happily consume the trees, benefiting from the vitamins and digestive aid provided by pine trees. However, it’s crucial that trees are free of decorations (especially metal hooks and tinsel) and fire retardant sprays, as these are harmful to goats.

The city’s official Christmas tree recycling program will run from January 11th to 25th at 27 locations across the city. Trees must be free of decorations and bases, and cannot be dropped off in bags. Garlands and wreaths are not accepted. The resulting mulch is used in parks and forests.

For those needing to recycle holiday lights, Reduce Waste Chicago is hosting its fourth annual collection program until January 31st at over 30 locations. Lights should be free of other decorations and packaging, and residents are encouraged to attempt repairs before discarding them. A full list of drop-off locations is available on their website. A list of the city’s tree recycling sites is also available.
