Good Earth Coffeehouse is closing its Uptown Center location in Saanich, the company announced in a Facebook post.
The location, which has been an Uptown mainstay since 2012, will close its doors on November 20.
Other locations in Victoria remain open, but those who enjoy a cup of coffee while shopping will have to look elsewhere.
Stephen Park, who works for Good Earth Coffeehouse, said the key reason for the location’s closure was the cost of rent.
Park also said that the employees who worked at the business have the option of moving to another location, so the closing of Uptown Cafe will not result in unemployment.
With a Starbucks right around the corner, it’s easy to see why the local coffee shop has trouble justifying its location.
Kristy Lowes, who works for Uptown, said that while she can’t say exactly why Good Earth Coffeehouse decided not to renew its lease, she can say that the businesses have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and are still working to recover.
Other Uptown businesses said rents are generally high in Greater Victoria, but Uptown is fair to the market and the perks of being downtown make it worth it.
“I’ve lived downtown for 15 years and moving uptown was the best business decision I’ve ever made,” said Kylee Weber, owner of Meraki Boutique. “It’s a community of amazing people who support me.”
With free parking, less traffic and staff dedicated to grounds maintenance and events, Weber says Uptown is more affordable and accessible than a downtown location.
Weber said the marketing team, staff and insurance made Uptown an ideal place for her to do business, but she expressed disappointment at Good Earth Coffeehouse’s departure.
“Small businesses are tough even at the best of times,” Weber said.
With Christmas tree lighting and other holiday activities planned for tonight (November 19), uptown shops can look forward to an increase in customers at a time when high prices and inflation are forcing consumers to spend pennies.
Although Good Earth Coffeehouse will no longer call Uptown its home, it can still be found in various locations including Capital Park, Indigo Mayfair Mall, Village Walk in Oak Bay and a future location in Bay Centre.
