GTA Online - is it expanding the right way?

A reader examines the new GTA 6 rumors and what changes he’s excited about… and fears might change the game for the worse.

We’ve only really had a proper leak for Grand Theft Auto 6 that says very little and yet the internet is already filled with fear and disgust at what it all means. There were really only three details: It’s set in ‘Miami’; It has two main characters, a Bonnie & Clyde style couple where the woman is a Latina; and Rockstar in general tries not so much to suppress his humor, which was immediately described as “bright”.

I’ll address that last point first because it’s so tiresome to have to argue that being nice to others is somehow a bad thing. I mean what does woke mean? Being conscious enough about how you talk to someone that you try not to offend them? And people get upset about that? They want to actively prevent others from doing this?!

This goes well beyond GTA of course, although I suspect GTA will become a major battleground in these “culture wars”, but I’m glad to see that Rockstar is siding with the angels with this and some tacky anti-trans jokes already removed from GTA 5. Which, would you believe it, somehow didn’t completely ruin it.

Whether this is due to the departure of Dan Houser and others from the OG writing team no one (except them) can tell, but it seems Rockstar is adopting a new, more mature stance. That doesn’t mean satire doesn’t exist, although, as Houser himself said during Trump’s tenure, the world has effectively moved beyond satire. The Onion now appears to be a perfectly sober and accurate news source, and it’s hard to exaggerate the absurdities of real life without being immediately stared at by reality.

As a result, I suspect GTA 6 will likely be less funny than the previous games, just like most comedy shows have gotten less funny lately. That’s of course blamed on Rockstar losing his teeth, but that’s the way it is these days, everyone has their opinion and it’s formed long before they even see what they’re complaining about.

Knowing how some people are, the fact that a woman is involved will be enough to drive some insane. I think most sane people can accept that it’s shameful that in all these decades, modern GTA has never before had a female protagonist. Heck, they hardly had any memorable female characters. The games have done so poorly in this regard that they never really redeem themselves, so just having this one is the bare minimum.

The last point is the odd reference to the Miami setting, although the author, a longtime games journalist, will be well aware that Vice City is the GTA version of that city. What does that mean? Did he somehow forget? That doesn’t seem very likely.

Does that mean instead that this new GTA will be set in the real world, or at least a little closer to it than previous games? There doesn’t seem to be any obvious reason for this, I’m not sure what would be lost or won, other than I think they can show how similar the game looks to reality.

If they end up making the game super serious, like a true thriller, it would probably make sense, but that doesn’t seem very likely. Considering the various absurd stunts and fights you engage in in the average GTA, I don’t see how you could ever take it entirely seriously.

To me, that would be the real outrage about GTA 6. I’m happy to hear that it’s growing up in terms of its comedy and the way it treats marginalized people, but if at the same time it takes all the fun out of it. game, then that’s something to get excited about. We’ll see what causes more trouble as the game’s release draws closer…
