Investigators have released new details about a house fire in Hamilton that sent a family of 15 to hospital Friday night, including a two-year-old boy who remains in critical condition.

The fire broke out in a house on Garden Crescent shortly after 6 p.m

Hamilton Fire Department (HFD) crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the garage and front door.

HFD said several inmates who were able to evacuate told firefighters the child was still inside.

“Firefighters immediately entered the home to begin a combined search and rescue and firefighting effort. Once inside, they were immediately met with heavy smoke and extreme heat,” HFD said in a press release.

It is added that the second team climbed to the back of the house and entered the ground floor through the window.

“Almost immediately upon entering the home, this team located the child, who was then handed over to a firefighter on a ladder who lowered the child to the ground,” HFD said.

The child, a 2-year-old boy, was found dead in a second-floor back bedroom, according to Clive Hubbard, an investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office (OFM).

Hubbard noted that the child was the only member of the family who could not get out.

Life-saving procedures were performed on the child and the team managed to restore the pulse.

The child, originally reported to be five years old, was taken to hospital in Hamilton before being flown to London. Hubbard said the boy remains in life-threatening but stable condition.

The boy’s parents and his 12 siblings were also taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. All 14 have been released from the hospital, Hubbard said.

HFD adds that one of their firefighters was slightly injured.

The home sustained significant fire damage estimated at $450,000 to $500,000, according to HFD.

OFM is on scene to help investigate the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in the basement.

Hubbard said they found nothing to indicate the fire was suspicious.

He added that he hopes to finish the investigation on Saturday so that the house can be returned to the family.
