Hollywood Hires Heavier Security After New Orleans Attack

Enhanced Security Measures at 2024 Golden Globes Ceremony

Following recent events, including a terrorist attack in New Orleans and a Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas, security for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards ceremony on Sunday is being significantly heightened. Organizers are bolstering protection for celebrity attendees, many of whom are outspoken gun control advocates, with increased presence from various agencies. This includes additional personnel from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the FBI, and Homeland Security, as reported by Deadline. Furthermore, Inside Edition confirms the deployment of snipers around the Beverly Hilton hotel, a standard practice at Hollywood awards shows, though the presence this year will be more substantial than in previous years. The Beverly Hills Police Department will also increase its officers, professional staff, and security contractors for the weekend, according to a department spokesperson cited by Deadline.

Security checks for attendees will be more rigorous. An unnamed police source told Deadline that vehicle searches, both interior and exterior, will be conducted if deemed necessary, regardless of the occupant’s identity. To accommodate the heightened security and expected influx of attendees, a major intersection will be closed. The intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard will be shut down to most traffic beginning Sunday morning, impacting traffic flow for miles around the Beverly Hilton.

The ceremony, broadcast live on CBS, is expected to attract a large number of Hollywood’s A-list celebrities, including Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Timothée Chalamet, and Selena Gomez. This year’s Golden Globes will feature a prominent theme of transgenderism, with several best picture nominees, *Emilia Perez* and *Conclave*, prominently featuring gender non-conformity in their plots. *Conclave*, in particular, has drawn criticism for its portrayal of the Catholic Church, especially its plot twist revealing the new pope to be intersex.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the star-studded event, the Golden Globes has faced declining viewership in recent years. Last year’s broadcast attracted only 9.4 million viewers, a significant drop from pre-COVID numbers which often exceeded 18 million. Organizers hope that host Nikki Glaser’s comedic style will help boost viewership.
