In search of a third win in a row, the Lakers welcome the cold Spurs

The Los Angeles Lakers will be looking for their season-best third straight win when they host the struggling and fading San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.

Sunday’s game is just the third in eight days for Los Angeles as the Spurs play the second game of a back-to-back that began with a loss to the Clippers on Saturday. They will play their fifth away game in seven days.

The Lakers have won back-to-back games for their season-best streak, the latest coming with a 128-121 win against underdog Detroit on Friday.

Anthony Davis scored 38 points (16 of them in the fourth quarter), 16 rebounds and four blocks, and Lonnie Walker IV added 17 points.

Austin Reaves had 16 points, Wenyen Gabriel 15, and Russell Westbrook 10 points and 12 assists off the bench as the Lakers shot 55.1 percent from the floor and 35 of 40 from the free throw line. Los Angeles was down by just two points with 7:39 to play in a back-and-forth game before securing the win with a 14-6 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes.

It was only the fourth win of the season for Los Angeles, which suffered two losses in five games.

“I’d be happy if I had zero points and we won,” said Davis, who has at least 37 points in back-to-back games. “We have to win. The rest will take care of itself. So we can’t get comfortable.

“We’ve been in this situation before: lose five, win two, lose five, win two. So we have to put together a winning streak to get back into this thing, but we have to take it one game at a time.”

The Lakers played without LeBron James on Friday, who missed his third straight game with an adductor strain. James’ participation in Sunday’s contest will be the deciding game.

The Spurs will wrap up their disastrous road trip in search of their first win since Nov. 11 after a 119-97 loss to the Clippers on Saturday. Jakob Poeltl led San Antonio with 20 points, while Doug McDermott had 13, Keldon Johnson 11 and Tre Jones 10 assists in the loss.

San Antonio played without Devin Vassell, who missed the game with an ankle injury.

The Spurs have lost nine of their last 10 games and have fallen below .500 in their worst five games of the season. San Antonio had never led in Saturday’s contest, which followed setbacks on the road in San Francisco against the Warriors, in Portland and in Sacramento. Those four losses averaged 21 points per game.

Despite having just four points in Saturday’s loss to San Antonio and never having more than 14 points in his 16 games with the Spurs, 19-year-old Jeremy Sochan is considered one of the franchise’s future cornerstones. Spurs manager Gregg Popovich is giving Sochan a lot of confidence and giving him some tough assignments, and the rookie isn’t shy about taking on the task.

Jeremy is not afraid, Popovich said. “He’s not impressed with the NBA or anything, he just comes to play. He just loves the game. You can just see it on his face – you can see his body language.”
