More than a million people are expected to celebrate the New Year in Times Square, and the NYPD has assured the public that there are no specific, credible threats to the event. A comprehensive security plan, calibrated in response to recent global events such as the Christmas market attack in Germany, will be in effect. This includes the strategic placement of sanitation trucks at intersections to prevent vehicle ramming, a tactic employed in previous years. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that a significant police presence will be visible, encompassing uniformed and plainclothes officers, canine units, helicopters, and boats. Specialized teams will address pickpocketing, while increased attention will be given to area hotels. Restrictions will also be in place regarding backpacks, umbrellas, and alcohol.
Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the city’s commitment to public safety, highlighting the extensive behind-the-scenes efforts to ensure a secure celebration. Street closures will begin at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, ultimately encompassing the area from 42nd to 57th Streets and Sixth to Eighth Avenues. Viewing areas will open officially at 3 p.m., with pedestrian access via checkpoints at 49th, 52nd, and 56th Streets from both Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Counterterrorism officers will screen spectators, and re-entry will not be permitted once inside the designated viewing areas. The expanded perimeter reflects security measures implemented following an ISIS-inspired attack two years prior. Prohibited items within viewing areas include backpacks, large bags, coolers, chairs, alcohol, and umbrellas. Commissioner Tisch advised attendees to check the weather forecast, as scattered showers are possible.
Reinforcing the city’s security posture, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the New York State Police will be at maximum staffing levels, and the National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support team will be on standby. The MTA and Port Authority will also maintain heightened vigilance.
