CIANJUR, Indonesia (AP) – The death toll from an earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Java earlier this week has risen to 310 after rescuers found more bodies under a landslide, an official said. At least 24 people are missing.
In devastated towns in West Java, residents gathered for Friday prayers near badly damaged mosques. Others prayed with rescuers between tents in evacuation centers.
Bodies were found Friday in two areas of the mountainous Cianjur district, where landslides triggered by Monday’s earthquake brought tons of mud, rocks and fallen trees, said Henri Alfiandi, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency.
More than 1,400 rescuers are searching the ruins of the 5.6-magnitude earthquake that injured more than 2,000 people.
The head of the National Disaster Management Agency, Suharyanto, using his first name, said rescuers would continue the search until reconstruction began.
“We do this to the last person. There is no reduction in strength, enthusiasm or equipment,” said Suharyanto.
He said the distribution of food and other supplies was improving, reaching more people in the 110 evacuation sites.
The disaster agency said the quake damaged at least 56,000 homes and displaced at least 36,000 people. Hundreds of public buildings were destroyed, including 363 schools.
An earthquake of this magnitude would otherwise not have caused so much damage. But Monday’s quake was shallow and shook a densely populated area that lacks earthquake-resistant infrastructure.
Indonesia is prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because it lies on an arc of volcanoes and faults in the Pacific basin known as the “Ring of Fire”.
