In this article, you will get all the information regarding Is ‘Becoming Elizabeth’ Based on a True Story?
Starz‘s Becoming Elizabeth purports to show us a whole new side of the legendary Queen Elizabeth I. The series takes us to the monarch’s teen years, when she wasn’t Gloriana Regina, but a princess. And one with a tenuous claim to that title, to boot. In Becoming Elizabeth, Elizabeth (Alicia von Rittberg) finds herself caught up in a scandalous (and abusive) love triangle. She’s hardly the Virgin Queen of lore, but a rather randy adolescent in over her head.
But is Becoming Elizabeth based on a true story? Sure, Becoming Elizabeth is set in the past and features folks like Queen Elizabeth, Lady Jane Grey (Bella Ramsey), and “Bloody” Mary Tudor (Romola Garai), but did all this stuff really happen to Elizabeth and her contemporaries? Or is creator Anya Reiss choosing an extremely revisionist view of history? What really happened?
The truth behind Starz’s Becoming Elizabeth might honestly surprise you…
IS BECOMING ELIZABETH BASED ON A TRUE STORY?
You better believe it! Starz’s Becoming Elizabeth is actually an incredibly historically accurate portrayal of a teenaged Elizabeth I. The series opens in the aftermath of Henry VIII’s death and explores the cutthroat court politics that pitted his three surviving royal heirs against each other.
A main focus of Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 is put upon the Princess Elizabeth’s extremely problematic relationship with her stepmother Catherine Parr’s (Jessica Raine) new husband Thomas Seymour (Tom Cullen). There is ample historical evidence to back up this storyline, as it was common knowledge that Thomas Seymour was incredibly inappropriate with the teen girl. Thomas Seymour’s attempt to kidnap King Edward VI also really happened, as did Catherine Parr’s death due to complications from childbirth. Likewise, Catherine Parr was a political power player, the Seymour brothers had a complex relationship, and Robert Dudley (Jamie Blackley) was the son of the man who would wrest power away from the Seymours.
So, yeah, if you’re watching Becoming Elizabeth on Starz and wondering if all this wild stuff happened to the teenaged Elizabeth I, it did. (Well, I’m not sure about the stag she killed, but almost everything else has historic evidence to back it up.) Becoming Elizabeth is pretty darn historically accurate, right down to Elizabeth’s brutal interrogations and Mary Tudor’s (also) red hair.
