Nineteen-year-old Javeria Wasim learned the hard way that the name “Jawbreaker” is no joke. While shopping with a friend in Canada, she purchased an oversized jawbreaker candy, even asking the store owner if it was safe to bite into. The candy, described as being the size of a snooker ball, proved to be more than a match for her jaw.
After taking a bite, Wasim immediately felt pain and noticed a loose tooth. The damage was more significant than initially apparent; a subsequent examination revealed a fractured jaw. An ambulance was called, and Wasim underwent emergency surgery the following day. The surgery involved repositioning her jaw and wiring it shut for six weeks with a bar placed between her upper and lower gums.
The experience was traumatic for Wasim, who described the pain and blurriness in the immediate aftermath of the injury. She spent over a month unable to eat solid foods due to the injury. The ordeal has left her completely avoiding candy, a stark contrast to her childhood enjoyment of the confectionery. She now urges others to exercise extreme caution when consuming jawbreakers, especially the larger sizes, hoping to prevent similar injuries.
