Jeff Baena, writer of *I Heart Huckabees*, director of *Life After Beth*, and Aubrey Plaza's husband, dies at 47.

Jeff Baena, the acclaimed indie writer and director, passed away at the age of 47. His contributions to independent cinema, marked by a unique voice and distinctive style, will be deeply missed.

Baena’s career began with a significant collaboration: co-writing the critically acclaimed film *I Heart Huckabees* with director David O. Russell. This early success established him as a promising talent in the independent film scene. However, it wasn’t until a decade later that he stepped behind the camera, directing his debut feature, *Life After Beth* (2014), starring his future wife, Aubrey Plaza. This film garnered a Grand Jury Prize nomination at the Sundance Film Festival, a significant achievement that foreshadowed his continued success. His subsequent film, *Joshy* (2016), also received critical acclaim.

Baena’s journey to becoming a director was not without its twists. After working as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis and then as an assistant editor for David O. Russell, a car accident and subsequent eye injury prompted him to pursue writing more seriously. Reflecting on his mentorship with Russell, Baena described their collaboration as creatively generous and supportive, allowing him to develop his own distinct style and voice.

Following *Joshy*, Baena continued to direct several more feature films, including *The Little Hours*, *Horse Girl*, and *Spin Me Round*, all starring Alison Brie. He also expanded his creative horizons into television, directing an episode of the anthology series *Cinema Toast*, which featured filmmakers using public domain footage as inspiration. His episode utilized footage from *Made for Each Other* (1939), while Plaza directed another episode, marking her own directorial debut.

The film community mourns the loss of Jeff Baena, a talented filmmaker whose work left a lasting impact. His creative contributions and collaborative spirit will be remembered fondly.
