Jeffries Slams Trump's DEI Freeze
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries sharply criticized President Trump’s response to the deadly mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan National Airport, calling the president’s suggestion that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives played a role in the tragedy “irresponsible.” Jeffries expressed outrage at the misinformation emanating from the highest office, emphasizing the devastating loss of life, including children and aspiring Olympians. He stated unequivocally that there is “not a scintilla of evidence” to link the accident to DEI programs and demanded leadership and decency from the executive branch in the face of national tragedy.

Beyond the immediate aftermath of the collision, Jeffries also condemned President Trump’s temporary freeze on billions of dollars in federal grants and loans, denouncing it as a “Republican rip-off scheme.” Flanked by representatives from organizations like Head Start and Meals on Wheels, Jeffries and Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Yvette Clarke highlighted the detrimental impact of the freeze on vital public services. Jeffries characterized the freeze as “unlawful, unconscionable, and un-American,” arguing it was designed to benefit billionaires and wealthy corporations at the expense of everyday Americans. He vowed to fight against this and similar policies.

Drawing a comparison to New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, Jeffries explained the Democrats’ strategic approach to opposing the Republican agenda. He emphasized their selective engagement, focusing on the most critical issues rather than reacting to every political provocation. He concluded his press conference with a firm declaration of continued resistance against what he termed the Republicans’ “rip-off agenda,” highlighting the successful opposition to the funding freeze as a testament to the Democrats’ resolve. The President’s budget office rescinded the memo freezing federal spending earlier this week.
