Karim Benzema will miss the entire World Cup after picking up an injury while training with France in Qatar.
The French Football Federation announced in a statement that the Real Madrid striker was forced to stop training after experiencing “pain in the quadriceps of his left thigh”. An MRI scan later confirmed a rectus femoris tendon injury, meaning the 34-year-old faces a three-week recovery period.
Didier Deschamps, France coach, said: “I am very sad for Karim who has made this World Cup a big goal. Despite this blow to the French team again, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything to respond to the great challenge that awaits us.”
The injury-hit world champions, already without Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté, start in defense against Australia on Tuesday. Deschamps has until Monday to call a replacement for Benzema, and Monaco striker Wissam Ben Yedder is an option.

Benzema has barely played in recent weeks and this was his first full training session with Les Bleus. He has played less than 30 minutes for Madrid since winning the Ballon d’Or last month.
He was France’s top scorer at the 2014 World Cup but did not play in the 2018 World Cup-winning season as he was still banned from the squad for his involvement in the sex tape extortion scandal that rocked French sport. He returned to last year’s European Championship and became France’s top scorer.
Deschamps was plagued by injuries. Striker Christopher Nkunku was injured just minutes before the end of the team’s final training session on Tuesday night and was replaced in the squad by Randal Kolo Muani.
The manager is also keen to see if his best centre-back, Raphael Varane, is fit for Australia, exactly a month on from leaving for Manchester United with a hamstring injury.
World number two and centre-back Presnel Kimpembe withdrew on Monday after failing to prove he was fit after suffering a knee injury.
