A woman was found dead on Christmas morning at the Lauderdale County detention center, WHNT News reports. The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office told WHNT on Wednesday that a female inmate was found unresponsive in her cell around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. An on-duty nurse pronounced the inmate dead at the scene.
The inmate had been arrested in Florence on Tuesday for driving under the influence (DUI). Sheriff Joe Hamlin stated that the inmate experienced a “medical episode.” The county coroner also confirmed the death at the detention center.
The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the death, and the inmate’s body will undergo an autopsy.
