Text copied from a PDF, an email or a chat rarely pastes cleanly. Instead of flowing paragraphs you get a staircase of short broken lines, and fixing them by hand means deleting dozens of line breaks one at a time. This free line break remover joins those broken lines back into normal paragraphs in one click, right here in your browser.
How to use the Line Break Remover
Paste your broken text into the top box. Live counts above it show the lines, words and characters as you type. Then pick the button that matches your problem:
- Remove all line breaks — joins every line into one flowing block, putting a space where each break was.
- Remove extra paragraph breaks — keeps your paragraphs but collapses runs of two or more blank lines down to a single break.
The cleaned text appears in the output box. From there, Copy puts it on your clipboard, Download saves it as a plain text file called cleaned-text.txt, and Clear empties both boxes so you can start again.
Worked example: fixing text copied from a PDF
Say a PDF gives you this:
The quick brown fox
jumps over
the lazy dog.
That is three lines where there should be one sentence. Paste it in and click “Remove all line breaks” and you get:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
Each line break became a single space, so the sentence reads normally. Now take a different mess — a document with three blank lines between every paragraph. “Remove extra paragraph breaks” turns those triple gaps into single breaks, so the paragraphs stay separate but the empty space stops sprawling. Use the first button when you want one flowing block, and the second when you want to keep your paragraph structure.
Where it helps
Students paste journal passages into essays and find every PDF line ending breaks the sentence. Office workers paste email threads into reports and get a jagged mess. Translators paste text into translation tools that charge by character or choke on broken lines. Chat logs and forum posts copied for reference have the same problem. In all of these, the text itself is fine — only the line endings are wrong — and a one-click join beats manual cleanup by a wide margin.
The live counts help too. Before you clean, the line count tells you how broken the text is; after cleaning, the word and character counts tell you what you actually have, which is handy when an assignment or a form has a word limit.
Honest limitations
This tool works on plain text only. Bold, italics, links and other formatting do not survive — what you get out is unformatted text, so reapply styling in your document afterwards. It also does not rejoin hyphenated words: if a PDF split “well-known” across lines as “well-” and “known”, joining gives “well- known” with the hyphen still there, and you will need to fix that one by hand. The paragraph-break button only collapses multiple breaks into one; it never removes all breaks, so it cannot turn a multi-paragraph document into a single block. And the tool cannot tell a real paragraph break from an accidental one — if your source has a genuine line break inside a poem or an address, “Remove all line breaks” will join that too, so check short structured text before you clean it. For reshaping the case of cleaned text afterwards, a case converter pairs well with it.
Line Break Remover — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two remove buttons?
“Remove all line breaks” joins everything into one flowing block of text. “Remove extra paragraph breaks” only collapses two or more blank lines into one, so your paragraphs stay separate.
Will it fix hyphenated words split across lines?
No. A word split as “well-” and “known” becomes “well- known” — the hyphen stays. Remove those hyphens by hand after cleaning.
Does it keep bold text, links or other formatting?
No. The output is plain text. Paste it into your document first, then reapply any formatting you need.
Can I save the cleaned text as a file?
Yes. Click “Download” and the cleaned text saves as cleaned-text.txt on your device.
