Muhyiddin Yassin trusted person to get support to become prime minister again

Malaysia’s inconclusive general election produced the country’s first ever hung parliament.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim secured the most seats, but his Pakatan Harapan alliance failed to win a majority.

The ruling coalition led by Ismail Sabri Yaakob suffered its heaviest electoral defeat to date, winning only 30 of the 178 seats it contested.

Political veteran Mahathir Mohamad lost his seat and suffered his first defeat in 53 years.

At 97, Mr Mahathir dominated Malaysian politics for decades, first as the country’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003, and is credited with driving the country’s rapid economic transformation since the 1980s.

However, the country is now politically unstable, having seen three prime ministers since the 2018 election.

The former ruling party UMNO achieved its worst election result so far. Voters instead turned to Perikatan Nasional and the conservative Islamic party PAS.

Rival parties must now come up with the name of a candidate they believe will have a majority in the lower house of parliament.

The stalemate means the support of East Malaysian parties on the island of Borneo will be crucial, and they are expected to push for a better deal for their region within Malaysia’s federal system.

The regional coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, is ready to work with former prime minister Muhyiddin Yasin and the current government to form a new government, according to state media.

“I am confident that I will have enough support from the legislature for the king to appoint me prime minister,” Mr Muhyiddin said, without suggesting which other parties might support him.
