The country’s national geology and mining service has dispatched experts to the area, which is believed to house a copper mine.

“There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 meters (656 feet), to the bottom,” said National Service of Geology and Mining (Sernageomin) director David Montenegro. “We haven’t detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water.”

The organisation confirmed areas from the entrance to the work site of the Alcaparrosa mine, located near the sinkhole, had been closed.

In a statement released on Monday, Lundin Mining – which owns 80 per cent of the property – said the sinkhole was yet to have any effect on workers or community members.

Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation holds the remaining 20 per cent of the site.

“The closest home is more than 600 metres away while any populated area or public service are almost a kilometre away from the affected zone,” the statement read.
