NASA’s Orion capsule has been sailing among the stars for three days now, and the spacecraft has started sending its first images. On Saturday, the space agency shared a series of photos taken by Orion halfway between Earth and the moon.

“We met today to review the performance of the Orion spacecraft and it is exceeding performance expectations,” Artemis I mission manager Mike Sarafin said in a blog post Saturday.

According to the release, Artemis I controllers used cameras to take “selfies” to assess possible damage to the hull of the unmanned capsule. “Over the past few days, the team has been evaluating anomalous star tracking data to correlate with engine firing. “Star trackers are sensitive cameras that record the star field around Orion,” the agency explained. “By comparing the images with the onboard star chart, the star tracker can determine which direction Orion is facing. The teams now understand the readings and there are no operational changes.”

SLS with Orion successfully launched earlier this week after a month-long delay due to a number of factors. If all goes according to plan, Orion will reach the Moon a few days before returning to Earth before landing in December.

“What an amazing sight to see NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft launch together for the first time. ultimately Mars,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said of the launch.

“It took a long time to get here, but Orion is now on its way to the moon,” added Jim Free, NASA’s associate assistant administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate. “This successful launch means that NASA and our partners are on the journey of space exploration further than ever before for the benefit of humanity.”

If Artemis I is ultimately successful, Artemis II will have the same systems operated by a crew of four astronauts. Artemis III – currently planned for 2024 – would then return astronauts to the moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972.
