Sandbox VR and Netflix Expand Their Partnership with “Rebel Moon: The Descent” VR Game
Sandbox VR has officially launched “Rebel Moon: The Descent,” a virtual reality game based on Zack Snyder’s Netflix franchise, across all 55 of its global locations. The immersive experience plunges players into the heart of the Rebel Moon universe, placing them in the role of resistance fighters battling the forces of the Motherworld on the planet Daggus. Players will navigate towering skyscrapers, gritty city streets, and subterranean mines while engaging in combat against enemy soldiers and spacecraft. The game’s description promises a thrilling adventure inspired by Snyder’s distinctive vision.
Initially launched as a limited preview in London alongside the release of “Rebel Moon — Part Two” in April 2024, “Rebel Moon: The Descent” represents Sandbox VR’s tenth immersive VR experience and their second collaboration with Netflix, following the highly successful “Squid Game Virtuals.” The latter game achieved remarkable success, generating $4.56 million in ticket sales within its first two months and becoming Sandbox VR’s fastest experience to surpass $1 million in sales.
This successful partnership is set to continue, with Netflix and Sandbox VR currently in discussions to adapt additional Netflix IPs into VR game experiences. Sandbox VR CEO Steve Zhao confirmed ongoing negotiations, stating, “We’re exploring a couple others right now, nothing signed yet. But having worked with Netflix on two IPs already…it’s just very organic for us to see what else is there. This could be definitely a multi-year relationship.” Zhao highlighted the importance of selecting IPs with strong fan bases and inherent suitability for VR, prioritizing action-packed narratives set within rich, visually compelling worlds that encourage social interaction and collaboration.
While Netflix partners with Sandbox VR for its VR gaming ventures, the streaming giant continues to expand its own in-house mobile game catalog, including a forthcoming title based on “Rebel Moon.” This strategy demonstrates Netflix’s multifaceted approach to gaming, encompassing both externally developed VR experiences and internally produced mobile games, with the recent release of “Squid Game: Unleashed” further illustrating this commitment. The success of “Rebel Moon: The Descent” and previous collaborations suggests a promising future for this strategic partnership.
