TRAVERSE CITY, MI – A city in Northern Michigan has just been listed number one in a ranking of the 10 best and most affordable places to retire in the United States. Realtor.com puts Traverse City at the top of the best places people should consider when looking to live out their golden years “without draining their savings.”

The list has cities in some states you might expect like Florida, but not some in others like California and Arizona, citing high home prices in those states.

“For some, living in a sunny location with great weather like Florida, California, or Arizona is [still] a must-have,” said George Ratiu, manager of economic research for Realtor.com. “But those popular retirement meccas are less affordable than ever. In fact, California and Arizona didn’t make the top 10 because home prices were so prohibitively high in these states.”

Reator.com looked at data for the 300 largest metro areas to compile its list. It says it looked for places with the most senior-friendly amenities in local homes for sale, including universal design and aging in place. For affordability, it says it factored in a year’s worth of median list prices from June 2021 through May 2022.

It also focused on metro areas with the highest populations of people ages 60 and over and it capped the 12-month median list prices in the top 10 to $500,000.

Traverse City’s median home list price came in at $390,000 and Realtor.com’s list raved about the Up North Michigan weather.

“From June through late October, Traverse City boasts near-perfect weather, making it an ideal place to live for anyone who wants to enjoy an active retirement,” Realtor.com said of the ranking. “E-bikes are everywhere. Boating, swimming, and (of course) pickleball are huge. Locals regularly go to wine tastings, check out the sand dunes, and paddleboard on a variety of lakes.”

So, what about the winter months?

“If it was 80 degrees all the time, there would be a million people living in Traverse City,” said Bart Ford, real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors. “We have a lot of snowbirds who go South when the weather is bad, and then they come back and are here for those months when the weather is nice.”
