The New York City Police Department (NYPD) saw further high-level personnel changes this weekend, impacting its Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB). This shakeup, occurring amidst an ongoing departmental overtime probe, involved the removal of several key IAB officials. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch removed Deputy Chief Chris Morello (IAB’s second-in-command), Inspector Joseph Profeto (head of IAB Group 1, which investigates allegations against captains and above), Inspector Michael Ricciardi of IAB Special Ops, and Deputy Inspector Dawit Fikru. This follows the Friday transfer of ten other IAB officers—two lieutenants, two sergeants, and five detectives—to different units.
These recent actions build upon previous changes. Commissioner Tisch had already removed Chief of Internal Affairs Miguel Iglesias, shortly after Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey’s resignation on December 21st (Iglesias chose retirement). Furthermore, six individuals from the Chief of Department’s office—five detectives and one police officer—were reassigned following Maddrey’s departure. One of these, Detective Ingrid Sanders (Maddrey’s driver), who earned $163,414 in overtime (1,456 hours) for a total salary of $352,462 last fiscal year, retired rather than accept a transfer to Queens. These personnel shifts come as the NYPD faces several ongoing investigations from federal and state prosecutors.
