Beverly “Bev” Jean Fitzsimmons, a beloved figure in the Skowhegan community, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024, at the age of 86. Bev left an enduring legacy as an exceptional educator, a passionate advocate for youth, and a vibrant member of the community.
Born in West Forks, Maine, in 1937, Bev moved to Skowhegan in 1945. After graduating from Skowhegan High School in 1956, she pursued her education at Farmington State Teacher’s College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later earned a Master’s degree and a Certificate of Advanced Study.
### A Distinguished Educator
Bev’s teaching career spanned over three decades, where she made an indelible impact on the lives of countless students. She began her teaching journey at Garret Schenck School in Anson, where she developed innovative teaching methods with her colleague, Jill Miller. From there, she moved on to teach at Skowhegan Jr. High School before settling in at Skowhegan High School, where she became Chair of the Social Studies Department.
As an educator, Bev was known for her dedication, enthusiasm, and ability to connect with students on a personal level. She was a tireless advocate for student opportunities, particularly for young women in education and athletics. Her mentorship and support extended beyond the classroom, as she chaperoned several educational trips to Europe.
### Community Involvement
Bev’s passion for giving back to her community extended beyond the school walls. She was a dedicated member of the Elks Club, the Wesserunsett Lake Association, and the Skowhegan Public Safety Building Committee. As a member of the Federated Church in Skowhegan and the Solon Congregational Church, she found solace and companionship in faith.
### A Vibrant Spirit
Bev’s life was filled with love, laughter, and adventure. She cherished her summers at Lakewood, where she hosted legendary Mother’s Day and Fourth of July parties for her family and friends. Her enthusiasm for skiing, boating, and socializing brought joy to all who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to brighten any gathering with her infectious smile and warm spirit.
### Honoring Her Memory
In lieu of a funeral service, Bev’s family plans to host a celebration of life later this summer. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to contribute to a scholarship fund in her name, details of which will be announced by her family at a later date.
### Surviving Family
Bev is survived by her sister, Joan Slipp of Anson; nephews Andrew Slipp and Eric Slipp; foster siblings Robert Lord and Debbe Murray; and a beloved extended family and countless friends.
