Coach Dafford V. Smith, Mentor and Community Leader, Passes Away
Coach Dafford V. Smith, who dedicated his life to mentoring young people and serving the Cullman community, passed away on June 30, 2024. He was 82 years old.
A Transformative Leader
Coach Smith was known for his unwavering belief in the potential of young people. He had a remarkable ability to see their strengths and encourage them to reach their full potential. As a coach and mentor, he guided countless children through their formative years, shaping their character and instilling in them values of hard work, perseverance, and integrity.
“Dafford was a true role model for our community,” said Mayor Woody Jacobs. “He believed in the power of youth and worked tirelessly to create opportunities for them to succeed.”
Legacy of Service
Beyond his coaching career, Coach Smith was actively involved in the Cullman community. He served on the boards of several organizations, including St. Andrew’s Global Methodist Church, Hope Horses, and the CCC Committee on Church Cooperation.
His contributions to the community were significant. He played a key role in establishing the Hope Horses therapeutic riding program, which provides equine-assisted therapy to individuals with disabilities.
“Dafford had a heart of gold,” said Rev. Dr. Mark Wendland, pastor of St. Andrew’s Global Methodist Church. “He was always willing to help others, whether it was providing guidance to young people or supporting those in need.”
Community Support
Coach Smith’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and gratitude from the Cullman community. People from all walks of life have shared their memories and expressed their appreciation for his mentorship and service.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 3rd, at St. Andrew’s Global Methodist Church in Cullman. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 2nd, at Moss Service Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to one or more of the following organizations: St. Andrew’s Global Methodist Church, Hope Horses, or CCC Committee on Church Cooperation.
