Ardie Velt Moss
May 1, 1929 – December 19, 2022
Ardie Velt Moss, Sr. of Rockford departed this earthly life, on December 19, 2022. He was born May 1, 1929, in Chidester, Arkansas to Cal and Ethel Moss. He attended schools in Camden, Arkansas. He married Lois N. Ware on September 3, 1956, in Camden, Arkansas, but later moved to Rockford, Illinois where he spent over 70 years of his life. Ardie was fondly called “Deek” by those who knew and loved him.
Ardie was employed for many years as a Laborer at Charles Construction and Rockford Black Top Construction, where he retired in 1991. He was a member of the Central Laborers Union, Local 312 since 1959. Ardie was a man who loved his family more than anything. When asked what he enjoyed doing most during his leisure time, he said, “Spending time with my family.” During his free time, Ardie loved fishing and gardening. He planted a vegetable garden every year. He also could be found most times during his retirement taking care of his lawn and planting flowers for his wife. He was able to continue caring for his lawn at age 93 with help and assistance from his sons and his grandson, Kobrin.
Ardie leaves to cherish many memories, his three sons, Larry (Denice) Moss, Anthony Moss, Ardie (Rebecca) Moss, Jr.; and his daughter, Ardine (Lawrence) Tennial; 18 grand-children; 28 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucinda Richardson and
Ethel Mae (Cal) Hampton of Texas; a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; his daughter, Patricia Moss; one granddaughter; two grandsons; four brothers, and five sisters.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. 200 N. Johnston Ave. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
