With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Marvin Emil Smisek, 84, on February 10th at Mala Strana nursing home in New Prague, MN. Surrounded by his loving family, he passed away peacefully after a long and fulfilling life.
Early Life and Family
Marvin was born on May 24, 1939, on a farm in Forest Township, Rice County, MN, to parents Ludmilla (Sticha) and Emil Smisek. He grew up on the farm with his brother, Melvin, who was born in 1943. In 1949, the family moved to Webster, where Marvin spent his formative years.
On September 18, 1962, Marvin married Adeline Holey, and together they had seven children: Brenda, Connie, Diane, Pam, Mark, Charles, and Michael. Although their marriage ended in divorce, Marvin remained a devoted father to his children throughout his life.
Military Service and Career
Marvin served his country proudly in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany. Following his military service, he pursued a career as an auto mechanic, following in the footsteps of his father. He worked as a truck mechanic for Webster Creamery and Schreyer Motors in Faribault, MN, before establishing his own mechanic shop in Lonsdale.
Marvin’s passion for mechanics extended beyond his professional work. He also worked part-time hauling livestock and enjoyed helping his cousin, Arnie Nerud, and his in-laws on their farms. Later in his career, he joined Malecha Farms, where he excelled as a semi-truck driver, tractor operator, and skid loader operator.
Community Involvement and Interests
Marvin was an active member of his community. He served as a Firefighter for the Lonsdale Fire Department for over eight years and was known for his dedication and hard work. He also participated in numerous euchre tournaments in the area, where he showcased his skills as a skilled card player.
In his leisure time, Marvin enjoyed fishing, gardening, and being outdoors, particularly cutting wood. He was an avid farmer and loved driving tractors. His enthusiasm for agriculture and mechanics extended throughout his life.
Legacy and Memories
Marvin Smisek will be remembered as a hard worker, a skilled mechanic, and an all-around nice guy. His family and friends cherish countless memories of his humor, generosity, and unwavering support. He will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, nieces, and many other relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 8th, at the Lonsdale American Legion, 115 Second Ave NW, Lonsdale, MN, from 10:30am – 2:30pm. The burial will take place at 3pm at Calvary Cemetery in Lonsdale. Lunch will be served at 11am, and music will be provided by Marvin’s grandson, Coltan, and his band, the Rockin’ Hep Cats. All are welcome to attend and share their memories of Marvin.

Marvin is survived by his children: Brenda (Clint) Pederson, Connie Theis, Diane (David) Dodds, Pam (Tony) Ramm, Mark (Camelle) Smisek, and Charles (Jolene) Smisek; 9 grandchildren: Chaz (Jennifer), Ben (Emily), Courtney (Kyle), Josh, Coltan, Logan, Anissa, Emma, and Luke (Jennifer); 5 great-grandchildren: Mya, Justin, Taylor, Gavin, and Zeda; his brother, Melvin (Gail); his 2 nieces, Shelly (Larry) Vosejpka and Kim (Brad) Jirik; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Michael, and his grandson, Zachary Theis.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Mala Strana nursing home for their compassionate care and support during Marvin’s final days.
