Early Life and Education

Herbert Carl Kontio was born on May 11, 1946, in Rockland, Maine, to Henry and Mary (Ranta) Kontio. He grew up on a blueberry farm, where he developed lifelong interests in fishing, rock collecting, and gardening. Herb graduated from Rockport High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine. He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Delaware for a master’s degree leading to a PHD, but his education was interrupted by the draft.

Military Service and Career

Herb proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years, following a family tradition. After his military service, he worked for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs at Togus for 35 years.

Family and Personal Life

Herb met the love of his life, Janet, at the University of Maine. They were married for 54 years and had three daughters: Noelle, Sarah, and Marykate. Herb was a devoted husband and father, and his family was the center of his life. He was unwaveringly kind, patient, respectful, and hard working. He put others first, and it seemed effortless for him.

Herb had a fantastic sense of humor and was always ready to share a joke or a funny story. His loved ones remember him for his infectious laugh and his ability to make them smile.

Hobbies and Interests

Herbert was an active man who enjoyed a variety of hobbies. In his younger years, he loved skiing. In his senior years, he became an avid golfer. He also enjoyed traveling, cooking, and spending time in nature.

Legacy

Herbert Kontio was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and dedication to his family. He passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the age of 77.

Memorial Service

A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Rockville Cemetery in Rockport. In lieu of flowers, please go golfing, fishing, or work in your garden in Herb’s memory.
