Early Life and Education
Diane H. Van Deventer was born on November 13, 1928, in Lockport, New York, to M. Aloysius and Blanche Hopkins. Growing up in a loving and supportive home, she developed a strong passion for learning and a deep desire to make a positive impact on the world.
Diane attended SUNY Brockport State Teachers College, where she excelled in her studies and met the love of her life, Raymond W. Van Deventer. Together, they embarked on a life filled with love, adventure, and service.
Teaching Career
Diane’s passion for education led her to a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher. She taught in Lockport, New York, and later became a frequent substitute at Sanborn and a classroom teacher at Starpoint Central. Her dedication to her students and her ability to inspire them were evident in everything she did.
Family and Retirement
Diane and Ray were blessed with three children: Linda Haag, Kathy Chandler, and John Van Deventer. They raised their family in a home filled with laughter, love, and a strong sense of community. Diane was a devoted wife and mother, always putting the needs of her family first.
When Diane and Ray retired, they chose to continue their journey in Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather and the opportunity to connect with new friends. Diane remained active, volunteering her time with numerous charities and pursuing her hobbies, including jewelry making, traveling, reading, and playing bridge and mahjong.
Legacy of Love and Service
Diane H. Van Deventer passed away peacefully with family at her side on April 15, 2024, in Waterville, Maine. She was surrounded by an outpouring of love and gratitude from her family, friends, and the community she served.
Diane’s legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her. She was a woman of exceptional kindness, compassion, and service. Her dedication to education, community involvement, and the well-being of others left an indelible mark on the world.
Celebration of Life
A Celebration of Life for Diane will be held at St. Bridget’s Center in North Vassalboro, Maine, on June 24, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. Her family invites all who knew and loved her to join them in honoring her memory and celebrating the extraordinary life she lived.
