Born on August 13, 1939, to Howard Ralph and Bertha Mae Shallcross, Irene lived a fulfilling life marked by her unwavering love for her family and her unwavering commitment to serving others.
A Matriarchal Legacy
Irene married the love of her life, Don Zehr, Sr., and together they shared 64 years of marital bliss. Their union was blessed with four children: Don Jr., Hank, Debbie, and Regina. Irene’s family was the centerpiece of her life, and she cherished every moment spent in their company.
A Lifetime of Community Service
Beyond her role as a devoted wife and mother, Irene was an active member of her community. After retiring from Cullman Regional Medical Center, where she worked in admissions, she dedicated herself to numerous volunteer activities.
Irene was passionate about giving back. She made countless lap blankets for the elderly, bringing warmth and comfort to those in need. Her dedication to education led her to volunteer at Parkside School, where she delighted in helping children improve their reading skills. Irene’s selfless spirit touched the lives of countless individuals throughout her lifetime.
A Passion for Quilting and Nature
In her leisure time, Irene found solace in quilting. She created exquisite quilts, each stitch infused with love and care. Her beautiful creations adorned the homes of her family and friends, bringing joy and warmth to their surroundings.
Irene also had a deep appreciation for nature. She loved spending time outdoors, watching the birds and tending to her flowers. The natural beauty of her surroundings brought her immeasurable peace and serenity.

Funeral Arrangements
A funeral service to celebrate Irene’s life will be held at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Cullman, Alabama, on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Allen Kuykendall and Daryl Ross will officiate the service, and Irene’s family invites all who knew and loved her to come together to honor her memory.
In lieu of flowers, Irene’s family requests that donations be made to the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church or a local charity of choice.
Irene’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her legacy of love and service will continue to guide and inspire generations to come. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
