It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Joanne G. Hewett, a cherished wife, mother, and esteemed member of the Skowhegan community. Joanne passed away peacefully on July 23, 2024, at her home, surrounded by the love of her family.

Joanne’s life was a testament to the power of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family, work, and community. Born on June 21, 1960, in Skowhegan to Marjorie (Spencer) and Joseph “Larry” Goulette, Joanne’s journey began with an upbringing filled with warmth and unwavering support.

A Life of Love and Family

In 1981, Joanne’s life took a beautiful turn when she married Jeffrey Hewett, her soulmate and steadfast partner. Together, they embarked on a journey of love and unwavering support, culminating in the arrival of their son, Shawn, in 2003. Shawn became the center of Joanne’s world, and her love for him was boundless and unconditional.

A Career Marked by Diligence and Dedication

Joanne’s professional journey was equally impressive. After graduating from Skowhegan Area High School in 1978, she pursued higher education at the University of Maine, Orono, graduating in 1982. Her career path took her through various roles, including Store Manager at Mr. Paperback for 17 years, Assistant Town Clerk for Norridgewock, and Administrative Assistant at Merrill, Hyde, Fortier, and Youney law office, Hi-Tech Software, and most recently, the Skowhegan Superintendent’s office.

A Passionate Advocate for Community Service

Beyond her professional life, Joanne was a passionate advocate for community service. She served on several boards, including the Bloomfield Trustees, The Redington Memorial Home, as Treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 403, and was a founding member and President of the Lioness. Joanne’s legacy of service extended to volunteering for Wreaths Across America in Washington DC and embarking on family trips to various destinations, including Florida, Quebec, Hawaii, and surrounding states.

A Legacy of Love and Inspiration

Throughout her life, Joanne’s hobbies and interests brought her immense joy and fulfillment. She had a green thumb and loved gardening, cooking, reading, listening to music, and traveling. But above all, it was her unwavering love for her family and community that defined Joanne’s life.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Jeffrey, and son, Shawn, of Skowhegan; her siblings, Barbara and Peter Blunda of Gorham and Steve and Debbie Goulette of Brewer; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her parents, Joseph “Larry” and Marjorie Goulette, predeceased Joanne.

A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held on August 17 at 11 a.m. on the island in Skowhegan at Tewksbury Hall, located behind the Federated Church. A graveside service will follow at Fairview cemetery in Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, the Hewett family encourages donations to the Oncology Department at RFGH, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice in Joanne’s memory.

Joanne G. Hewett’s legacy of love, compassion, and dedication will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew her. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family and community for generations to come.
