Lorraine Somers, a woman of unwavering faith and compassionate spirit, passed away peacefully at her beloved home on the “Hill” on May 7, 2024. She was surrounded by the love of her family and friends as she made her final journey home.
Born on May 29, 1958, in Waterville, Maine, Lorraine was the second daughter of Oneal and Edwina Gendreau. She grew up on Libby Hill, where she forged an unbreakable bond with her four sisters and foster brother. As a child, Lorraine was an adventurous and inquisitive spirit, often following her father as he tended to the animals and garden on their property.
Lorraine’s formal education began in Oakland schools, where she graduated as part of the class of 1976. During her high school years, she embraced the camaraderie of close friends, attended church regularly, and excelled in her studies.
After graduating from high school, Lorraine embarked on a series of work experiences that shaped her character and work ethic. She held positions at Diamond Match, Safe way Stores in California, Hathaway Shirt Company, and Sappi Fine Paper, where she retired in 2005 as a recovery operator.
Throughout her life, Lorraine pursued a wide range of hobbies and interests, including snowmobiling, motorcycling, fiddlehead gathering, gardening, and photography. She found immense joy in spending time outdoors, capturing the beauty of nature through her lens, and sharing her harvests with loved ones.
Lorraine’s compassionate heart extended beyond her family and friends to the wider community. She dedicated herself to serving others through her involvement in the Sunshine Club, a transportation service for the visually impaired. For over 14 years, she volunteered her time and energy to ensure that those in need had access to essential services.
In 1984, Lorraine’s life took a profound turn when she met Kent, her soulmate and future husband. Together, they embarked on a 40-year journey filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. They shared a passion for the outdoors, music, and hosting gatherings of friends and family.
Lorraine’s home on the “Hill” was her sanctuary, a place where she found solace, joy, and a deep connection to the land. She spent countless hours tending to her garden, raising pigs and chickens, and creating a haven of peace and tranquility.
On May 7, 2024, Lorraine’s earthly journey came to an end after a courageous battle with cancer. She left this world surrounded by the love of her husband, Kent, and the countless lives she had touched throughout her years.
Lorraine Somers will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a woman of unwavering faith, compassionate spirit, and unwavering generosity. Her legacy of love, service, and joy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Celebration of Life
A Celebration of Life for Lorraine Somers will be held at 11 a.m. on June 8, 2024, at the Methodist Church in Oakland, Maine. Following the service, there will be a reception with refreshments at the church. The family will gather for a private gathering at their home on the “Hill” after the reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kennebec Humane Society in Waterville, Maine, in Lorraine’s memory. Her love for animals and her desire to help those in need would be honored by such a gesture.
