Remembering Mary Ryan: A Community Icon and Devoted Family Matriarch
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Janette (Hartman) Ryan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Mary passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, at the age of 91. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A Life of Service and Community Involvement
Mary was born on a wheat and cattle farm in rural Coulee City, Washington, on December 23, 1932. She attended a one-room school for much of her early education before moving on to secondary and high school in town. It was during her high school years that she met the love of her life, Dick Ryan. Given that her graduating class consisted of only four boys and nine classmates, Mary often joked that she had “gotten the pick of the litter.”
After graduating from high school, Mary attended Whitworth University, where she earned her degree in primary education in 1955. Meanwhile, Dick joined the Air Force as a navigator/bombardier. They married in 1955, and Mary spent the next 20 years as an Air Force wife, moving frequently and teaching whenever possible. During their first decade of marriage, they moved 10 times. In addition to teaching, Mary volunteered at a hospital in the Philippines while the family lived there, supporting Dick during his service in Vietnam.
Mary and Dick were blessed with four children: Richard (Rick), Kelly, Kathleen, and Christopher (Chris). Upon Dick’s retirement from the Air Force in 1972, the family moved to Paradise, California, where they both embraced their new community and found ways to serve. Mary was a founding member of the Paradise Performing Arts Center (PPAC) board, playing a pivotal role in planning, fundraising, and building the current facility. She continued to support the organization throughout her life, volunteering countless hours and attending countless performances.
Mary was also a strong supporter of the Paradise Art Center, where she practiced her love of pottery and served on the board. She was a member of PEO, as well as the Methodist Church. In recognition of her dedication and volunteer efforts, Mary was recognized as “Citizen of the Year” by the Paradise Elks Lodge in 1982.
A Loving Family Matriarch
Mary was the heart of her family, and her love and support extended far beyond her own children. She was a devoted grandmother to her eight grandchildren: Ryan, Lauren, Hannah, Abigail, Matt, Emily, Kate, and Luke. She cherished every moment she spent with them, attending their sporting events, recitals, and graduations. Her love and guidance shaped their lives, and they will forever carry her legacy with them.
A Lasting Legacy
Mary Ryan’s legacy is one of service, community involvement, and unwavering love. She dedicated her life to making a difference in the lives of others, and her impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the entire Paradise community.
A memorial service for Mary will be held at the Paradise Performing Arts Center on September 28th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to the Paradise Performing Arts Center.
