A Life of Love and Legacy

Muriel Young Niles, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024, at the Captain Lewis Residence in Farmingdale, Maine. She was 95 years old, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.

Muriel’s life journey began in the quaint town of Houlton, Maine, on May 16, 1929. She was the beloved daughter of William A. Young and Rowena Andersen, who instilled in her a deep sense of family values and a love for her home state.

Muriel’s family relocated to Hallowell when she was in her early teens. She attended Hallowell High School, where she excelled academically and forged lifelong friendships that she cherished throughout her life. It was during this time that she met her soulmate, Ernest A. Niles, whom she married on May 27, 1948, beginning a beautiful chapter in her life.

Muriel embarked on her professional career as a telephone operator with the New England Telephone Company. Her keen attention to detail and dedication to providing excellent customer service made her a valued asset to the company. In 1963, she embarked on a new path within the State of Maine, where she spent 27 fulfilling years, ultimately retiring as the Supervisor of Telecommunications in 1990.

Family was always at the heart of Muriel’s life. She and Ernie welcomed two beloved children into the world, Ernest A. Niles, Jr., and Shirley A. Boucher. She was an exceptional mother, showering her children with love, support, and guidance. Her home was always a warm and welcoming haven for her family and friends.

Beyond her family, Muriel had a passion for gardening, transforming her yard into a vibrant oasis filled with colorful blooms and lush greenery. She also enjoyed traveling, exploring new destinations with her loved ones and immersing herself in different cultures.

Muriel was an avid sports fan, particularly supporting the University of Maine’s Women’s Basketball team. She was a regular attendee at games, cheering on her favorite players and experiencing the camaraderie of fellow fans.

Spending time at the family camp on the shores of Lake Cobbossee brought Muriel immense joy. It was her sanctuary, where she could relax, fish, and create cherished memories with her family. She loved the tranquility and beauty of the lake, finding solace and rejuvenation in its embrace.

Muriel’s faith was an integral part of her life. She was a devoted member of The Cox Memorial United Methodist Church in Hallowell, where she actively participated in various church activities and found spiritual guidance and community.

Muriel Young Niles lived a remarkable life, filled with love, laughter, and service to others. Her warm smile, compassionate heart, and unwavering spirit will forever be etched in the memories of those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, leaving a void that can never be truly filled. May her memory continue to inspire and bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
