Henry Charles Guthery Sr.: A Legacy of Metal, Music, and Family
On July 3, 2024, the Cullman County community mourned the loss of Henry Charles Guthery Sr., a beloved patriarch and a driving force in the region’s metal industry and Sacred Harp music scene.
Roots in Metal
Born in Logan, Alabama on November 25, 1942, Henry inherited a strong work ethic from his father, Charles “Charlie” Guthery, who owned a successful metal fabrication business.
After completing his education, Henry joined his father’s company and quickly established himself as a skilled craftsman and savvy businessman. In 1969, he founded Henry C Guthery Metal Co, which became a leading provider of metal products and services to the region.
For over 55 years, Henry’s company played a vital role in the construction and infrastructure of Cullman County. He was instrumental in shaping the metal industry, not only through his innovative techniques but also through his mentorship of countless young workers.
Sacred Harp Harmony
Beyond his success in the business world, Henry was a passionate devotee of Sacred Harp music, a traditional form of unaccompanied choral singing.
For many years, he served as the director of the Cullman County Sacred Harp Convention, bringing together singers from across the region to share their love of this unique musical tradition.
Henry’s powerful voice and infectious enthusiasm made him a beloved figure in the Sacred Harp community. He was a vocal advocate for the preservation and appreciation of this rich musical heritage.
‘Paradise Valley’ and Family Life
Henry’s true sanctuary was his family farm, which he affectionately called “Paradise Valley.” Nestled on the original Guthery homestead, it was a place where he could indulge in his love of gardening and spend quality time with his loved ones.
Henry was a dedicated husband to his wife of 40 years, Sherry Lee Kimble Guthery. Together, they raised three sons: Henry Guthery Jr, Rodney Guthery, and Scott Guthery.
He was also a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His beloved family was the cornerstone of his life.
Legacy of Love and Service
Henry Charles Guthery Sr. passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind an enduring legacy of love, service, and community spirit.
A Celebration of Life and Sacred Harp Singing was held at Branded by Christ Cowboy Church in Hanceville, Alabama on July 15th. True to Henry’s spirit, a barbecue was held in his honor after the service.
