Early Life

Retha was born on May 27, 1935, in the quaint town of Oakland, Maine. She was the youngest of 10 children born to Ormand and Florence Stevens. Retha spent her early years on the family farm in North Belgrade, where she developed a deep love for her family and the Maine countryside.

Love and Marriage

In the spring of 1953, Retha’s life took a transformative turn when she met Gerald Libby, the love of her life. They married on November 14th of that year, embarking on a journey that would span over six decades.

Raising a Family

After Gerald’s service in the U.S. Army, they settled in their cozy home on Route 8 in North Belgrade, where they raised their family. Retha dedicated herself to her children, Brenda, Steve, Stuart, and Gary, providing them with a loving and supportive home.

A Helping Hand

Once her children reached school age, Retha returned to school and earned her certification as a Certified Nurse’s Aide. She found her calling at Thayer Hospital in Waterville, where she worked tirelessly for over two decades. Her compassionate and caring nature made her a beloved member of the hospital community.

Community Involvement

Retha was an active member of the North Belgrade community. She loved attending potluck suppers and family reunions, where she would spread joy with her infectious laughter and warm embraces. She was an avid supporter of the Winslow Black Raiders, cheering on her granddaughters at sporting events.

Retha’s love for her family was unwavering. She adored her granddaughters and great-grandchildren, treating them with the same kindness and affection that she had shown her own children. She will always be remembered for her homemade treats, her unwavering belief in the power of love, and her ability to brighten the lives of all who knew her.
