Richard Earl Getchell Sr., 93, of Scarborough, Dies

Obituary

Richard Earl Getchell Sr., 93, of Scarborough, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born in Skowhegan, Maine, on September 12, 1931, to Earl and Mary (Smith) Getchell. He graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1949 and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his military service, Richard returned to Maine and began a successful career in the construction industry.

In 1956, Richard married the love of his life, Patricia Ann (O’Brien) Getchell. Together, they raised six children and built a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he always put his family first.

Richard was a skilled craftsman and took great pride in his work. He was a member of the Carpenters Union for over 50 years and worked on many notable construction projects throughout Maine. He was also a talented woodworker and enjoyed creating beautiful furniture and other pieces for his family and friends.

In his spare time, Richard loved spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he also enjoyed camping, hiking, and gardening. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and the Maine Sportsman’s Alliance.

Richard was a kind and compassionate man who always saw the best in people. He was a true friend to many, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Richard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Patricia; his children, Richard Jr. (and wife, Susan), Mary (and husband, John), Michael (and wife, Lisa), Patricia (and husband, David), James (and wife, Sarah), and John (and wife, Emily); his grandchildren, Richard III, Sarah, John Jr., Michael Jr., Matthew, Mark, David Jr., Patrick, James Jr., and John Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Richard IV, Lily, and Michael III; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Skowhegan on August 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Skowhegan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
