Early Life and Military Service

Richard was born on October 19, 1929, in Mount Vernon, Maine, to Glenwood H. and Hilda (Stevens) Damren. He grew up on the family farm, where he honed his skills in agriculture and developed a deep love for the outdoors.

After graduating from Monmouth Academy, Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the Robert L. Wilson as a machinist mate. His wartime experiences instilled in him a strong sense of patriotism and service.

Professional Career and Civic Engagement

Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Richard returned to Maine and began his professional career at Diamond International Company in Oakland, where he worked for over three decades. He held various positions within the company, including lathe operator, saw filer, and foreman, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft.

Richard’s commitment to serving his community extended beyond his workplace. He was an active member of the Lakeside Promenaders Square Dance Club and Marty Van Wart’s Square Dance group, bringing joy and laughter to countless individuals. He also lent his time and expertise to the Draggin’ Masters Snowmobile Club and the Belgrade Historical Society, preserving the rich heritage of his beloved town.

Family and Legacy

In 1952, Richard married the love of his life, Rachel Lea Stevens. Together, they built a strong and loving family, raising four children in Belgrade. Richard was a devoted and supportive husband, father, and grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his family.

Richard was known for his unwavering work ethic, his ability to fix anything, and his infectious optimism. He was a pillar of strength and guidance for his family and friends, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement.

Beyond his immediate family, Richard played a vital role in the Belgrade community. He was a respected elder who shared his wisdom with younger generations, inspiring them to lead lives of purpose and service. His legacy will continue to touch the lives of those who knew him for years to come.

Celebration of Life and Interment
