Cullman County Native William Morrell Self Passes Away at 83

Cullman, AL – William Morrell Self, a lifelong resident of Cullman County, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the age of 83. Mr. Self was born on April 23, 1941, to William Loys Self and Aubie Louise Cates Self.

Early Life and Education

Mr. Self grew up in Cullman County and attended local schools. He graduated from Hanceville High School in 1959.

Career

After graduating from high school, Mr. Self began working for the State of Alabama Highway Department. He worked for the department for over 40 years, retiring in 2003.

Personal Life

Mr. Self was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to his wife, the former Mary Ann Carter, for 60 years. They had two sons, William Nelson Self and Jason Morrell Self, and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Self was a member of the Hanceville First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Cullman County Historical Society and the Alabama Retired State Employees Association.

Death and Legacy

Mr. Self passed away peacefully at his home in Hanceville on Saturday, May 25, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and friends.

Mr. Self will be remembered for his kind heart, his strong work ethic, and his love for his family and community. He was a true pillar of the Cullman County community and will be deeply missed.

Graveside services for Mr. Self will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, AL. Hanceville Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
