“September 5” recounts the pivotal moment during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics that irrevocably altered the landscape of media coverage and continues to shape live news reporting today. The film follows an American sports broadcasting team thrust into the harrowing reality of covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes. Offering a unique perspective on this globally significant event, witnessed by an estimated one billion people at the time, the movie explores the immediate adaptation required to shift from sports reporting to live coverage of a devastating tragedy.

The narrative centers around Geoff (John Magaro), a driven young producer eager to prove himself to his demanding boss, the iconic TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Alongside German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), Geoff unexpectedly finds himself at the helm of this unprecedented live broadcast. As the situation unfolds, with conflicting reports swirling and the hostages’ lives hanging in the balance, Geoff faces agonizing choices, testing his moral compass under immense pressure.
