A suspect is in custody following two slashings at the Grand Central subway station in Midtown Manhattan late Tuesday night. The attacks occurred around 10:15 p.m. on a northbound 4/5/6 train platform. Police believe the incidents were random and unprovoked.
According to authorities, 28-year-old Jason Sargeant initially approached a 42-year-old man, resulting in an argument that ended with the man being slashed in the wrist. Sargeant then fled upstairs, where he slashed a 26-year-old woman in the neck near a turnstile. Witnesses observed Sargeant attempting to escape on an escalator and immediately alerted police, leading to his swift arrest. Police recovered a knife from his jacket. Sargeant has a history of prior arrests and is facing multiple charges, including assault, reckless endangerment, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Both victims were transported to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
