Police say a taxi jumped a curb in Herald Square, striking multiple pedestrians.


On Christmas Day, a yellow cab jumped the curb in Herald Square, Manhattan, striking multiple pedestrians. The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of West 34th Street and Sixth Avenue. According to police, a 58-year-old cab driver, who experienced a medical episode, veered onto the sidewalk while traveling north on Sixth Avenue, hitting six people.

Three pedestrians were hospitalized: a 9-year-old boy and a 41-year-old woman were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, while a 49-year-old woman was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Three other women, aged 19, 37, and 49, refused medical treatment at the scene. The cab driver was also taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for evaluation. Police reported that all injuries were non-life-threatening.

A tourist visiting from Oregon described the chaotic scene, recounting how his wife was struck and how he assisted a 9-year-old boy whose leg was pinned under the taxi’s tire. He helped lift the vehicle to free the boy and his mother, who was also injured.
