Trae Young threw a long pass to AJ Griffin for a wide-open layup at the overtime buzzer and the Atlanta Hawks beat the undermanned Toronto Raptors 124-122 on Saturday night after rallying late in regulation.

Young had 33 points and 12 assists, De’Andre Hunter added 22 points, and Clint Capela had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks.

As Young received the inbounds pass with 3.8 seconds left and the score tied at 122-all, Griffin was aware of running behind the defense and positioning himself near the basket. It was pure basketball instinct.

Young caught the pass, dribbled and threw the pass just under halfway. Griffin jumped, scooped up the ball and made a shot before it went down.

“I was in the right place at the right time,” Griffin said. “I felt like he was going to push. I saw that and stopped early. I said, ‘I’ll just sneak up behind them.’ That’s exactly what happened.”

Young hit two free throws with 59 seconds left to give the Hawks their first lead since midway through the third quarter.

The Raptors led 108-101 at the 2:36 mark of the fourth quarter. The Hawks went on a 10-point run in 90 seconds to take a 111-109 lead with 59 seconds left on Young’s two free throws.

Toronto had a great chance to win at the end of regulation, but Scottie Barnes missed a layup and a rebound attempt at the buzzer.

The Raptors missed the buzzer, the Hawks hit theirs and took down Toronto in overtime

Scottie Barnes missed a wide-open layup at the end of regulation before Atlanta nailed its own buzzer beater in the extra frame.

Griffin scored eight of his 17 points in overtime, and his second assist made it 118-115. His first runner on Atlanta’s first possession of overtime gave the Hawks a 115-113 lead and they never trailed again. The teams traded baskets in overtime before Young’s layup on the glass made it 120-117 with 28.2 seconds left.

Hunter missed two free throws at the 7-second mark that would have iced it for Atlanta. OG Anunoby followed with two free throws for Griffin’s win.

“We just keep playing and keep fighting,” Young said. “It’s a long game. They started to run away. We ran, we ran. The game is long so you can’t stop at any point. We knew we had a chance to come back in the game coming up. We just kept playing.”

Barnes had a season-high 28 points and Anunoby added 27 for the Raptors, who were looking for their third straight win despite multiple injuries.

Toronto dressed only nine players. Key team members — Pascal Siakam, Precious Achiuwa, Gary Trent Jr. and Fred VanVleet — have missed a total of 18 games since Nov. 6.

“It’s a little tough, but it’s not something we can’t resist,” Raptors forward Thaddeus Young said after scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds. “We were flawed, but we still had a chance to win the game.

The Raptors got 15 points from VanVleet and a game-high 17 points from backup guard Malachi Flynn before the foul.

Toronto made it 42-33 with a 22-8 run capped by a 3-pointer by VanVleet early in the second. The Raptors called a timeout after Collins’ dunk cut the lead to 51-49, but Toronto led 62-55 at halftime when Barnes’ layup hit the buzzer.

Atlanta is 50-51 all-time against the Raptors, 27-24 at home.

The Raptors’ Barnes limped off the floor with 4:21 left in regulation with a left foot injury after a fumble under the basket, but soon returned. It appeared to land on Young’s foot before falling to the court. Toronto head coach Nick Nurse hopes the next three days off will give the team a chance to recover. Siakam (right adductor strain), Achiuwa (dislocated right ankle), Dalano Blanton (dislocated left ankle), Chris Boucher (illness), Trent (illness) and Otto Porter Jr. (dislocated toe) did not arrive.

The Raptors host Brooklyn on Wednesday and the Hawks take on Cleveland on Monday.
