Former Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose traded his basketball shoes for gardening gloves (at least for a day) to host a unique pop-up flower shop in River North. Partnering with West Loop florist Planks & Pistils, Rose’s “Rose’s Flower Shop” event at the Tortoise Supper Club drew hundreds of fans who braved frigid Chicago temperatures for a chance to meet their hero and receive a free bouquet.
The event, held Thursday afternoon, was part of a series of special appearances culminating in “Derrick Rose Night” at a Chicago Bulls game. Fans, many waiting for hours, expressed deep admiration for Rose, citing his inspiring perseverance through injuries and challenges as a key reason for their loyalty. Larry Taylor, first in line after arriving Wednesday evening, described Rose as “Chicago’s finest,” emphasizing his genuine and humble nature. Another fan, Matthew Phan, shared how Rose’s career provided a source of happiness during difficult times. He sent his bouquet to his mother, stating, “I would watch his clips and get happy again. It really touched my heart coming here.”
The pop-up shop itself was a charming spectacle. The venue was adorned with flowers and signs, including one playfully reading, “Stop and smell the roses.” Fans selected from an assortment of over 1,200 red roses and baby’s breath, which were then expertly wrapped by smiling staff. Free delivery within a 15-mile radius was offered, allowing fans to send their bouquets to loved ones. A photo opportunity with Rose, including both digital and Polaroid pictures, completed the experience.
John Caleb Pendleton, owner of Planks & Pistils, reflected on the event’s success, highlighting the deep affection Chicagoans hold for Rose. He noted Rose’s down-to-earth personality and the powerful symbolism of the event: “Flowers truly force you to stop and appreciate them for what they are, right now,” Pendleton explained. “It forces pause in a world that’s always telling us to move faster.” Fans like Adolpho Rodriguez, who traveled from Milwaukee, echoed this sentiment, explaining that Rose inspired him to strive for personal excellence.
The event served as a touching reminder of Rose’s enduring legacy in Chicago, extending beyond basketball to encompass community connection and shared moments of joy.
