Schiff: New Orleans Attack Dooms Patel's FBI Bid
Representative Adam Schiff vehemently opposes Kash Patel’s nomination to lead the FBI, citing Patel’s lack of experience and adherence to conspiracy theories as disqualifying factors. Schiff, appearing on NBC’s *Meet the Press*, pointed to the recent deadly truck attack in New Orleans as a stark example of the need for an experienced and level-headed FBI director. He argued that Patel’s prioritization of political vendettas and belief in “deep state” conspiracies make him unfit to lead the bureau in investigating such critical incidents. Schiff emphasized the importance of having a director with the judgment and character to effectively combat terrorism and prioritize national security, contrasting this with Patel’s apparent focus on pursuing perceived political enemies.

Patel, a staunch Trump loyalist, has publicly espoused false claims about the 2020 election being stolen and alleged that a “deep state” within the federal government attempted a coup against President Trump. In interviews and podcasts, Patel has explicitly stated his intention to target judges, lawyers, and journalists he deems responsible for undermining Trump. He has even produced children’s books promoting election conspiracy theories and established a foundation to defend those involved in the January 6th Capitol attack. His November 2022 podcast, titled “What did the FBI know before Jan. 6?”, further exemplifies his focus on promoting conspiracy theories surrounding the FBI’s role in the 2020 election.

Conversely, Senator John Thune, the Republican Senate Majority Leader, expressed a more measured view. While acknowledging the FBI’s need for reform and acknowledging diminished public trust, Thune stated that he met with Patel and believes Patel understands the importance of prioritizing the FBI’s mission and rebuilding public confidence. However, Thune did not commit to voting for Patel’s confirmation.

The New Orleans attack, in which a former US Army veteran pledging allegiance to ISIS drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, underscores the gravity of the situation and the critical need for a competent and experienced leader at the helm of the FBI. Federal agents have revealed that the attacker had also planted unexploded homemade bombs at the scene. This incident highlights the urgency of the need for effective leadership within the FBI, a need that Schiff believes Patel is ill-equipped to fulfill.
