Scientology Critic Mike Rinder Dies at 69

Mike Rinder, a former high-ranking Scientology executive turned outspoken critic, has passed away, his wife, Christie King Collbran, announced on Instagram. In an emotional post, Collbran expressed her profound sadness and pain, while also acknowledging Rinder’s enduring legacy of courage and integrity. She described him as a stabilizing force in the lives of those who knew him, concluding her message with a heartfelt, “The world will remember you.”

While the cause of death was not specified, Rinder publicly disclosed his battle with esophageal cancer last year. His final message to his wife, shared in the Instagram post, revealed a life lived fully, encompassing both his earlier years within Scientology and the subsequent, fulfilling chapter with his family. He expressed regret at not fully achieving his goals of ending Scientology’s alleged abuses and witnessing his son Jack reach adulthood, urging others to continue the fight against those abuses.

Rinder, raised in Australia as a Scientologist, signed what he described as a “billion-year” contract with the organization early in his life. He rose to prominence within the church, serving as international spokesperson and head of the Office of Special Affairs before becoming a vocal critic in 2007. His memoir, “A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology,” detailed his experiences and alleged abuses within the organization, including claims about concerns regarding Tom Cruise’s loyalty during his marriage to Nicole Kidman. Later, he co-hosted the Emmy-winning Scientology exposé series, “Scientology and the Aftermath,” with Leah Remini.

The Church of Scientology has responded to Rinder’s passing with a statement on their website, dismissing him as a credible source and citing his expulsion for alleged malfeasance. TMZ has reached out to the Church for further comment.
