Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Halifax area Friday evening.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., the weather agency said it was tracking a severe thunderstorm “capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.”

“Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall,” the warning said.

A strong thunderstorm 10 km north of Tantallon was moving southeastward at 20 km/h, it said.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” Environment Canada said.

Severe thunderstorm watches were also issued for Lunenburg and Hants counties, where conditions are “favourable” for the development of severe thunderstorms.

“A cluster of thunderstorms just north of New Ross are tracking southeastward. Downpours are the main potential threat but gusty winds and small hail are also possible,” it said.

Environment Canada is asking the public to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts.

All of Nova Scotia is already under a severe heat warning, with humidex levels expected to reach up to 41 C in parts of the province.
