Six people, including a mother and child, were injured after being struck by a taxi cab in Midtown Manhattan on Christmas Day. The accident occurred just after 4 p.m. in Herald Square at West 34th Street and Sixth Avenue. According to the NYPD, the 58-year-old taxi driver experienced a medical emergency, causing him to drive onto the sidewalk while traveling north on Sixth Avenue.

The incident resulted in injuries to six pedestrians. A 9-year-old boy and a 41-year-old woman were transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. A 49-year-old woman was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Three other women, aged 19, 37, and 49, refused medical attention at the scene. Police reported that all injuries were non-life-threatening. The taxi driver was also taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for evaluation. Authorities stated that no criminality is suspected.

A tourist from Oregon recounted the incident to Eyewitness News, describing how his wife was struck and how bystanders sprang into action to help a mother and child pinned under the taxi. He explained that a group of people worked together to turn off the taxi’s engine, remove a portion of the fender, and lift the vehicle to free the boy whose leg was trapped under the tire. They then moved both the child and his mother to safety.
