Skeleton Crew's giant crab hides surprising Star Wars echoes.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s latest episode introduces a terrifying new creature: a giant, trash-covered crab monster that’s a delightful blend of horror and heartfelt homage. Encountered by Wim and KB on the outskirts of Lanupa in episode six, “Zero Friends Again,” this seemingly monstrous crab, named Tet’niss by Art Director and Fabrication Supervisor Mark Dubeau, holds a surprising secret. Its shell, overflowing with discarded junk, isn’t random; it’s a carefully curated collection of Easter eggs referencing the wider Star Wars universe.

Far from being a purely digital creation, Tet’niss is a testament to the enduring power of practical effects. A behind-the-scenes video reveals that Dubeau intentionally incorporated pieces from model kits used in the original Star Wars films. A closer look reveals the presence of familiar droid parts: a complete R2-D2, the upper half of C-3PO, and the torso and leg of K-2SO. These aren’t meant to represent the actual droids’ remains, of course, but serve as a playful nod to the legacy of these iconic characters and the artistry behind them.

The decision to populate Tet’niss’s shell with these specific parts speaks volumes. The art department could have easily opted for generic debris, but instead, chose to create a loving tribute to the craftsmanship of previous Star Wars productions. This meticulous attention to detail is consistent with the show’s previous dedication to nostalgic elements, such as the recreation of the holographic circus from the Star Wars Holiday Special.

In an era often dominated by CGI, Skeleton Crew’s commitment to practical effects, painstakingly crafted and lovingly detailed, is refreshing. The resulting creature, while undeniably terrifying (and perhaps vaguely reminiscent of Moana’s Tamatoa), is imbued with a sense of care and passion that shines through. Tet’niss, therefore, becomes more than just a monster; she’s a symbol of the creators’ deep appreciation for the history and artistry of Star Wars.

New episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premiere Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+, concluding with the finale on January 14th.
