The Sort Alphabet Tool puts a list of lines in alphabetical order, from A to Z. Paste your lines, or upload a .txt file, and this Sort Alphabet Tool sorts them in one click, in letter order where capital letters do not jump ahead of small ones. Use it for name lists, word lists, stock lists, and any list that is easier to use when sorted.
How to use the Sort Alphabet Tool
- Type or paste your list in the big text box, with one item on each line. Or use the file picker above the box to upload a .txt file, and its text will load into the box.
- Click “Sort Alphabetically”.
- Your sorted list replaces the text in the same box, one item per line.
- Click “Copy to Clipboard” to copy the sorted list, or “Download” to save it as a file named sorted_text.txt.
- Click “Clear” to empty the box and the file picker when you want to start a new list.
You can edit the text and sort again at any time. Blank lines are removed when you sort, so gaps in a pasted list disappear on their own.
Worked example
Paste these six lines, one per line: banana, Apple, cherry, 10 green bottles, apple pie, Zebra. Click “Sort Alphabetically”, and the box shows them in this order: 10 green bottles, Apple, apple pie, banana, cherry, Zebra.
Two things are worth noticing. The line that starts with a digit comes first. And “Apple” sorts by its letters, not by its capital A, which is why it sits next to “apple pie” instead of jumping to the top or bottom of the list.
Example results
Each row shows a short list before and after sorting. In the tool, every item stays on its own line.
| List you paste | Sorted list |
|---|---|
| pear, kiwi, banana | banana, kiwi, pear |
| Zebra, apple, Mango | apple, Mango, Zebra |
| 9 lives, 2 fast, 10 slow | 10 slow, 2 fast, 9 lives |
| Kiwi, kiwi, Banana | Banana, kiwi, Kiwi |
Two rows deserve a second look. The number row shows that sorting is by character, not by value, so 10 lands before 2. The Kiwi row shows how case is handled: lines that differ only in capital letters stay together, small letters first. If your list mixes names, numbers, and codes, check the first sort carefully, because the tool applies this one simple rule to every line in the same way.
Limits and good to know
- The tool sorts whole lines, not words inside a line. Each line moves as one block, exactly as written.
- Order is A to Z only. There is no reverse, Z to A, option.
- Numbers sort as text, not by value. “10 slow” comes before “2 fast” because the character 1 comes before 2.
- Blank lines are deleted during sorting. Duplicate lines are kept, not removed, and stay next to each other.
- Capital and small letters sort together by letter. When two lines differ only by case, the small-letter version comes first, as the Kiwi example shows.
- File upload reads .txt files only, and sorting happens in the same box, so save or copy your original list first if you need to keep it unsorted.
Why is my result empty or wrong?
Nothing seems to happen when you click Sort: the box may be empty, or your lines may already be in order. Add or change a line and click “Sort Alphabetically” again to see the move.
Your uploaded file did not appear: only .txt files are read into the box. Save the file as plain text with a .txt ending and upload it again, or paste the text in directly.
Numbers are in the wrong order: the tool sorts lines as text, so 10 comes before 2. Add leading zeros, such as 02 and 10, if you need numbers in value order.
A line seems to have vanished: it was most likely a blank line, which sorting removes. Real text lines are never deleted, only moved to a new place in the list.
Why use this Sort Alphabet Tool?
It tidies long lists in one click without opening a spreadsheet: names for a class or team, stock items, guest lists, or words for a game or puzzle. You can paste text or load a .txt file, sort it, then copy the result or download it as sorted_text.txt, all on one page with no account.
Sort Alphabet Tool – frequently asked questions
Can the Sort Alphabet Tool sort from Z to A?
No. It sorts from A to Z only, and there is no reverse option in the tool.
Does it remove duplicate lines?
No. Duplicate lines are kept and end up next to each other after sorting. Only blank lines are removed.
Can I sort a file instead of pasting text?
Yes. Upload a .txt file and its text loads into the box. Click Sort Alphabetically, then copy the result or download it as sorted_text.txt.
Are my lists uploaded to a server?
No. Sorting happens in your browser, and an uploaded file is read on your own device. Nothing you paste or load is sent anywhere.
